DEI Update from KERA

We reached out to KERA for an update on how their DEI work has been progressing since joining Public Media for All. They offered the following.

What’s one DEI success you’ve had at your organization recently?

KERA formed three internal DEI task forces around staffing, sourcing and audience. As of June 2021, we have completed 80% of the recommendations made by the staffing group, which included the creation of a DEI Advisory Council to ensure internal accountability within the organization. We are now focusing our efforts on developing stage two of our DEI action plan.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned about DEI work at your organization?

While KERA views itself as a fair and inclusive organization, we realized that we needed to ask the staff how they felt about the work environment. We hired local firm Kanarys to conduct an anonymous climate survey and we now have a better understanding of the areas where we can improve. The data provided will allow us to focus on these issues using several key indicators such as race, gender and years of service.

What resources and support do you need to improve DEI at your organization?

This year, KERA is participating in the Dallas Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (DTRHT) Nonprofit Cohort. We are currently working with a DTRHT coach, who will help structure and facilitate conversations about race with staff. As part of the training, KERA will also develop a racial equity policy, racial equity theory of change and an organizational strategic plan with a racial equity lens.

PMFA is dedicated to helping organizations that sign up to join us, including KERA, reach impactful DEI goals. We provide community support, educational resources, and are evolving our services to meet industry needs.
